Background:
I was stationed at Coast Guard Base Honolulu in 1973 and ran across one of the crew members from the Coast Guard Cutter Jarvis who relayed the story of the near sinking of the ship just six months before.
I remember the member telling me that if anyone said they weren’t scared, they were lying.
The crew all thought they were going to die in the freezing Alaska waters.
With the fact the ship was disabled, being tossed around in severe cold weather, you could understand these feelings.
The story stuck with me and when I retired from work in 2018, I started writing a magazine article of the incident.
I interviewed over 35 people associated with the ship and rescue, along with obtaining the ship records from the National Archives in San Bruno.
The amount of information obtained resulted in this book.
I have over 38 years active and reserve Coast Guard service.
