This is the exciting tale of a group of young men are sent to the South Pacific in World War II with brand new airplanes to fight in the skies against the Japanese.

They fought in the air, on the ground, against disease, poor living conditions, and creeping critters.

Many died, were wounded, or taken prisoner.

More pilots died from accidents than died in combat.

This story is told through personal interviews and official documents. It is their story told in their words.

Background:

Jeff Dacus is a retired schoolteacher who taught U.S. History in Evergreen and Vancouver School districts for 35 years, and also retired from the U.S. Marine Corps.

He volunteers with local veterans’ groups and is a speaker at historical events and with school groups.

He is the historian for the annual Northwest Heritage Festival.

He portrays George Washington in schools and at historical events.

He has written dozens of articles in the online Journal of the American Revolution in addition to stories in print magazines Leatherneck, Air Classics, and the Journal of the Company of Military Historians.

He is the recipient of the 2020 General Roy S. Geiger award for aviation writing.

He is the author of the books “The Fighting Corsairs,” “Desert Storm Marines.” And “Perceptions of Battle: Washington’s Victory at Monmouth.”

He resides in Vancouver.
